These days there has been a significant increase in the number of online test takers. As we also know that the current pandemic (COVID-19) has caused a lot of trouble for the education sector. The only way to fill this gap is to conduct online education and exams. Though, one of the biggest challenges here is to assure the integrity of the online exam.

Inner working of online remote proctoring software

Most of the schools, colleges, institutes, etc are conducting online examinations. However, it has given a kick start to conducting these exams using Remote Proctoring Software. Also, many corporates conduct online pre-employment tests. In either case, it becomes difficult to evaluate a candidate.

Cheating is a common approach that is followed by many individuals to score good marks in the exam. To avoid this, many educational institutes and corporates have started conducting Online Proctored Exams. The concept behind this Exam is that the examiner (Proctor) can invigilate the exam virtually. A proctor can keep an eye on any suspicious activity carried out by the candidates. If they try to cheat, the proctor can halt the exam and report them immediately.

Let’s understand the detailed Inner Working of the Remote Proctor Exam.

Initially, the candidate has to install a Proctoring Software on their device. Along with this, they must have a good internet connection.

The Inner Working of this is a three-step Process i.e. Start Process, Evaluation Process and Completion Process.

In the First Step, the candidate is supposed to verify themselves via Identity Proof and Facial Recognition Process. Here, the face recognition feature is provided by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. The integration of this technology makes the software even more useful by ensuring that the same candidate is appearing for the exam.

The second step is the evaluation process where a proctor invigilates the entire examination. A proctor can easily keep an eye on around 5-10 candidates (depending on the proctoring software). This platform enables the proctor to ensure integrity of the examination. The software provides a grid view of the entire screen where it becomes feasible for them to look at all the candidates.

The moment any candidate deviates from the screen, the proctor can either warn them with the help of a chatbox or the system flags such incidence automatically. There is a chatbox provided in the software at the bottom screen where the proctor can send a message to the candidate during the examination.

The last step is where the exam is completed. The candidate should submit the test here and in case they do not submit the test, it gets submitted automatically. A recording of the entire examination is archived by the software and is also preserved by the proctor.

Note that there are three types of Online Remote Proctoring i.e. Live Online Proctoring, Recorded Proctoring and Automated Proctoring.

1.  Live Online Proctoring

Live Online Proctoring is where a proctor is assigned to oversee the examination process. They can prevent any form of unfair practices like if any candidate attempts to cheat in the exam, they can immediately report them and stop the examination.

2.  Recorded Proctoring

In Recorded Proctoring, the software makes use of the audio-video and screen sharing features. The entire process is recorded so the proctor can watch the recording of the entire exam. The software provides features such as playback and fasts forward to watch these recordings.

3.  Automated Proctoring

In Automated proctoring, along with the recording feature, a separate system is available to monitor the candidate. Here the feature such as advanced audio-video analytics is used. It is an advanced type of proctoring where no proctor is needed to invigilate the exam.

The user-friendly interface of the Remote Proctoring Software includes a Dashboard. There are multiple tabs available on the dashboard which help the proctor to carry out the examination smoothly. The admin i.e. the proctor can create tests, quizzes, select various templates, etc. Similarly, the proctor can add/remove candidates for a particular test. They can also import the questions or can enter them manually for various tests.

On the other hand, candidates can keep a track of the active exams, upcoming exams, missed exams and completed exams on the dashboard. Candidates can also analyze their results via the detailed report provided to them. This includes subject wise reports, graphical reports and solution wise reports.

The software generates both offline and online reports. A candidate gets the report based on their performance in the exam. Whereas, a proctor gets the same report with additional information such as the candidate’s behavior during the exam like deviating from the screen or copying from the browser.

The screen sharing feature allows the proctor to examine if the candidate is trying to open multiple tabs in the browser. If found so, the proctor can either warn or report the candidate.

Online Proctored Exam is an important aspect that will be used by almost every other educational institutes and corporates. It is effective software that will help the examiner to evaluate a candidate based on the skills they possess. This way the online exams can be conducted without any hassle and candidates cannot cheat knowing that someone is monitoring them even if the exams are conducted virtually.
